About the Parishes

Buittle and Kelton were separate parishes until a linkage was formed in 1977 under Rev T W Lund. On his retirement in 1983, the congregations were united and a linkage was made with St Andrews, Castle Douglas under Rev A Swan. In 1991, he was called to Loanhead Parish Church and a new linkage was made with the united parishes of Auchencairn and Rerrick. The two churches are different in structure, which adds to their interest.

Buittle has a square bell tower and vestibule at the East end and at the West, a chancel with beautiful stained glass windows. These were designed by Douglas Strachan and were added, after the 1914/1918 War, as the War Memorial for Buittle Parish.

Kelton bell hangs on the east end of the church. The interior of the church is unusual in the red tiling on the walls and also the barrelled red cedar wooden roof. The diagonal aisles lead to a platform and to the organ with painted pipes, which was installed in 1895.

At present, the congregation numbers over 200. There are 19 members of Session and 12 members of congregation, making up the Congregational Board.
